It runs a single 12 kHz frequency with the compact Blade9 Double-D coil, a practical combination for general recreational detecting.

Quest X5 IDMAXX modes and controls

Quest gives the X5 three factory programs: Field, Gold and Park. Discrimination works by segments across the top of the display, each one a group of Target IDs such as 1 to 20 or 21 to 40; switch a segment off and the X5 ignores that group. Park and Field start with some segments already rejected, and Gold accepts them all, so discrimination is not available in Gold mode.

Ground balance is manual: hold the ground balance button and pump the coil above the ground, and redo it when the soil changes. The X5 also has a pinpoint button, adjustable sensitivity, a depth indicator, a backlight and a flashlight on the 60 x 45 mm LCD control box. Wired headphones plug in through the included USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter. The built-in 1000 mAh Li-Po battery charges over USB-C and takes about 4 hours to charge fully.

Settings that matter on the Quest X5 IDMAXX

The compact coil: in an older park where coins sit close to nails and aluminum trash, a compact coil makes it easier to check one response at a time. It also gets in around rocks, roots and other obstacles. A compact coil does not eliminate target masking, though; a coin right next to a nail can still hide.

Field, Gold and Park programs: we like that you can pick a program to suit the location. Gold mode accepts every target ID with no discrimination, which suits prospecting, but it does not mean the X5 can identify natural gold. Gold can respond much like other non-ferrous metals.

Target ID: the X5 shows a numerical target ID from 1 to 99 on every signal. Picture a buried object in a park: the number gives you more to go on, but we encourage you to learn the audio responses too rather than relying on the display alone.

Wet conditions: Quest rates the X5 as waterproof to 3 m (10 ft), which gives you room to work rain, wet grass, creek edges and shallow water. Check that your headphones are made for underwater use before you submerge the detector.

One mistake to avoid with the Quest X5 IDMAXX

Treating it as a multi-frequency or specialist gold detector. The X5 is a single frequency 12 kHz detector, not simultaneous multi-frequency, and its Gold program does not turn it into a pulse induction gold machine. For nugget hunting in difficult ground, see our gold detectors.

Our recommendation on the Quest X5 IDMAXX

We recommend the X5 to beginners who want a compact detector with useful target ID and waterproof construction.
