The Garrett ACE 400 is what we recommend to most first-time buyers. The 8.5x11" DD coil gives real depth on coins and relics, Iron Audio tells you what you are rejecting, and five search modes are straightforward without being overwhelming. The ACE 300 costs less and works fine, but the ACE 400's larger coil is a meaningful real-world difference in the field.
