XP Metal Detectors

XP makes its metal detectors in France, and its detectors are wireless: the coil, the remote and the headphones talk over XP's own digital radio link, so no coil cable runs up the stem. The DEUS II is XP's flagship, running Fast Multi Frequency or 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz with coils waterproof to 20 m (66 ft). The ICON and ICONX put XP's multi-frequency technology behind simpler controls, the ORX is XP's light gold and coin detector, the original DEUS is still part of XP's range, and the XTREM Hunter is XP's deep-seeking detector for large targets. Serious Detecting is an Authorized XP Dealer with a showroom in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Our XP collection holds the detectors we sell, plus the coils, headphones, pinpointers and parts that fit them.

DEUS II: XP's Flagship

The DEUS II runs Fast Multi Frequency, XP's simultaneous multi-frequency technology, or any of 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz, with 12 factory and 12 user programs. XP rates its coils IP68 to 20 m (66 ft), the RC remote to 20 m with its red cap, and the BH-01 bone conduction headphones to the same depth for diving; the WS6 headphones are rainproof, not submersible. Battery life runs 8 to 20 hours for the coil, depending on program and frequency; 15 to 30 hours for the RC, depending on audio output; and about 15 hours for the headphones. You run it from the RC remote or the WS6 Master, where a module on the headphones controls the detector. Our Which XP Deus II to Buy guide compares the setups.

ICON and ICONX: Multi-Frequency With Simpler Controls

The ICON and ICONX run XP's multi-frequency technology with fewer settings than the DEUS II. The ICON adds single frequencies of 4 and 14 kHz, 3 factory and 3 user programs and 5 reactivity levels. The ICONX adds a 28 kHz frequency, 6 factory and 6 user programs and 7 reactivity levels from 0 to 6, and XP gives its weight as about 710 g without the remote on the stem. Both ship with an 11 inch FMF coil, run about 11 hours on a charge and recharge in about 4 hours. XP rates them waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), and for underwater use XP specifies the BH-02 bone conduction headphones.

ORX: A Light Detector for Gold and Coins

XP gives the ORX a weight of 750 g with the remote worn on the hip. With the 9 inch HF coil it runs 21 frequencies from 13 to 59 kHz, and with the 9.5 x 5 inch HF elliptical 3 base frequencies from 15 to 80 kHz. With X35 coils it runs 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz. It has 4 factory programs (two for gold, two for coins) and 2 user programs, manual ground balance from 60 to 90 or an automatic grab, and lithium batteries for up to about 20 hours of detecting. The ORX takes the 9 inch HF and 9.5 x 5 inch HF elliptical coils as well as the 9 inch and 11 inch X35 coils. The ORX remote on its own is not rated for water; for diving to 5 m (16 ft), XP sells a waterproof kit for the DEUS and ORX with an aerial antenna and a waterproof armband for the remote. Without it, we recommend the ORX for land. In our experience the HF elliptical suits gold work on the ORX.

XTREM Hunter: Deep Targets With the DEUS II

The XTREM Hunter is XP's deep-seeking detector for large buried objects. It pairs with a DEUS II remote like a new coil, and XP states it can reach large targets as deep as 5 m (16 ft). XP gives a weight of 2.9 kg (6.4 lb) with the remote, more than 10 hours per charge and a construction built for rain and bad weather.

The Original DEUS

XP still lists the original DEUS in eight packs with the 9 inch or 11 inch X35 coil. With X35 coils it runs 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz, and it has 10 factory programs plus slots for your own. It weighs 975 g (2.15 lb) with the remote and from about 750 g (1.65 lb) with WS4 or WS5 headphones only, and its batteries run about 15 hours for the coil, 19 hours for the remote and 22 hours for the headphones. The DEUS uses XP's X35 and HF coils, not the FMF coils of the DEUS II and ICON, and like the ORX it dives to 5 m (16 ft) with XP's waterproof kit.

Coils, Headphones, Pinpointers and Parts

XP's coils fall into two families. The FMF coils (9 inch, 11 inch, 13 x 11 inch and the 9.5 x 5 inch HF2 elliptical) fit the DEUS II, ICON and ICONX. The X35 and HF coils fit the original DEUS and the ORX. In our experience the 11 inch FMF coil is a good all-round park coil on the DEUS II. The XP MI-6 pinpointer links wirelessly with the DEUS II, DEUS, ORX, ICON and ICONX, and XP rates it water resistant to 6 m (20 ft). Spare stems, coil covers, batteries and manuals are on our XP parts and accessories page, and our XP parts by detector model list shows what fits each detector. For bags, backpacks and hard cases, see XP carry bags and cases.

XP Warranty

XP covers its metal detectors for 5 years, and its lithium batteries for 2 years. The ICON and ICONX are covered for 5 years once you register the detector in your My XP account, with batteries and accessories covered for 2 years. XP also sells paid 5-year warranty extensions for the DEUS II, the ICON and ICONX, and FMF coils, which take coverage to 10 years in total; each must be bought and registered within 24 months of buying the detector or coil from an authorized XP dealer. We carry the DEUS II and FMF coil extensions on our XP warranty extension page.

How does the XP DEUS II compare to the Minelab EQUINOX 900?

The XP DEUS II and the Minelab EQUINOX 900 are both multi-frequency detectors for parks, fields, relic sites and beaches, and they differ most in build and waterproofing. The XP DEUS II runs Fast Multi Frequency or 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz, its coil is wireless with no cable on the stem, and XP rates its coils IP68 to 20 m (66 ft), with the BH-01 headphones for diving to the same depth. The Minelab EQUINOX 900 runs Multi-IQ or single frequencies of 4, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz, adds a Gold mode, and Minelab rates its control box and coil IP68 to 5 m (16 ft). We recommend the DEUS II for experienced hunters who want a very light detector, deep-water use or a lot of audio control, and the EQUINOX 900 for hunters who want one waterproof detector with simpler menus. Our staff can talk you through both by phone or email.

Which XP metal detectors are waterproof?

How far an XP metal detector can go into water depends on the model, the coil and the headphones. XP rates the XP DEUS II coils IP68 to 20 m (66 ft) and the RC remote to 20 m with its red cap, and for diving XP's BH-01 bone conduction headphones are rated to the same depth; the WS6 headphones are rainproof only. XP rates the XP ICON and XP ICONX waterproof to 5 m (16 ft), with the BH-02 bone conduction headphones for underwater use. The XP ORX and the original XP DEUS have waterproof coils, and for diving to 5 m (16 ft) XP sells a waterproof kit with an aerial antenna and a waterproof armband for the remote; we carry the XP Deus certified underwater kit. Without the kit, we recommend the ORX and DEUS for land. The XP XTREM Hunter is built for rain and bad weather, not submersion.

What makes XP metal detectors different from other brands?

XP metal detectors are different mainly because they are wireless and light. On the XP DEUS II, ICON and ICONX, the coil, the remote and the headphones talk over XP's own digital radio link, so there is no coil cable on the stem, and XP gives weights from about 710 to 750 g for these detectors. XP makes its detectors in France and covers them for 5 years, with 2 years on the lithium batteries. Because the coils carry their own batteries, each part charges separately; XP's cable charges the coil, remote and headphones together. See all XP metal detectors.

What is the XP ORX and who is it for?

The XP ORX is XP's light wireless detector for gold prospecting and coin hunting on land. XP gives its weight as 750 g with the remote worn on the hip, and it has 4 factory programs (two for gold, two for coins) and 2 user programs. With HF coils the XP ORX runs 21 frequencies from 13 to 59 kHz on the 9 inch HF coil and 3 base frequencies from 15 to 80 kHz on the 9.5 x 5 inch HF elliptical. With X35 coils it runs 35 frequencies from 3.7 to 27.7 kHz. It does not run the simultaneous multi-frequency of the XP DEUS II, which we recommend if you also hunt saltwater beaches or iron-heavy sites. Ground balance is manual from 60 to 90 or an automatic grab, and XP rates the battery at up to about 20 hours. For diving to 5 m (16 ft) the ORX needs XP's waterproof kit; without it, we recommend it for prospecting and dry-land hunting.

Which XP metal detector should I buy?

The XP metal detector to buy depends on where you hunt and how much control you want, and for most detectorists who hunt often we recommend starting with the XP DEUS II: Fast Multi Frequency or 49 single frequencies from 4 to 45 kHz, 12 factory and 12 user programs, and coils rated IP68 to 20 m (66 ft) for beaches, wading and diving. If you want XP's multi-frequency with simpler controls, the XP ICON runs multi-frequency or 4 and 14 kHz with 3 factory programs and is waterproof to 5 m (16 ft); the XP ICONX adds a 28 kHz frequency and 6 factory and 6 user programs. For gold prospecting on land, the XP ORX weighs 750 g with the remote on the hip and runs high frequencies with its HF coils, up to 80 kHz with the HF elliptical. Our Which XP Deus II to Buy guide helps you choose a DEUS II setup, and our Best XP Metal Detectors guide compares the range.
