A waterproof metal detector seals its electronics, control box, coil, shaft connections, against water intrusion up to a stated depth, where the pressure exceeds what the seals can hold. That rating is the whole story: a “waterproof” machine rated to 3 feet handles rain and wading but is not an underwater machine, while a true underwater detector fully submerges and stays sealed at diving depth. “Weatherproof” or “rainproof” machines are a step below, splash-resistant only, never for submersion.
