In mildly mineralized ground with larger nuggets, some general detectors will find gold. In typical goldfield conditions - the highly mineralized soil where most gold concentrates - standard single-frequency VLF machines lose stability and miss targets that a purpose-built gold detector would find. The difference is most pronounced in productive ground: if you are hunting where gold actually is, you need a machine built for it. A gold detector machine operates at higher frequency with ground balance systems designed specifically for mineralized conditions. See what makes a dedicated gold metal detector different.
