A gold detector finds the ground and the larger nuggets. For fine gold and creek-bed recovery, you also need gold panning equipment - a quality gold pan, classifier, and snuffer bottle at minimum. A small crevice tool for bedrock crack sampling, and a classifier bucket for pre-sizing creek material before panning, round out a practical field kit. The detector and panning gear work together: detect to find the productive patch, pan to recover the fine gold the detector cannot pick up.
