The Minelab Vanquish series handles dry sand detecting well and performs better than single-frequency machines in light salt conditions due to Multi-IQ technology. The original 340/440/540 models have waterproof coils but non-submersible control boxes - do not submerge them in surf. The new 360/460/560 models are fully waterproof to 5 meters and are the correct choice for beach and water detecting. For serious salt surf hunting, the Minelab Equinox 800 is a further step up in beach performance. See beach metal detectors.
