On dry sand above the waterline, most land detectors with waterproof coils work adequately. In wet salt sand and the surf zone - where the best targets concentrate - single-frequency VLF machines generate constant false signals due to salt conductivity. The productive beach ground requires a simultaneous multi-frequency machine. Standard machines are also not rated for submersion, so wading into the surf risks damage. For serious beach detecting, use a machine built for it. See beach metal detectors.
