Standard pulse induction detectors have limited discrimination capability compared to VLF machines. Most PI gold detectors operate effectively in all-metal mode for maximum sensitivity rather than using discrimination notches. Some machines like the Garrett Axiom and ATX have basic discrimination features, but not the fine-grained target ID system that makes VLF machines useful for coin and relic detecting in trash-heavy sites. This is the primary tradeoff of PI technology - maximum ground penetration at the cost of reduced discrimination. For relic and coin hunting, VLF machines are usually the better choice.
