Yes - a standard land pinpointer in the surf zone is a quick way to destroy an expensive accessory. For beach and water detecting, use a pinpointer rated for submersion: the Garrett Pro-Pointer AT at 10 feet is the most common choice. The Nokta Pointer at IP67 handles most beach conditions. If you dive detect, the Quest XPointer Scuba is purpose-built for underwater use. Standard non-waterproof pinpointers can be used on dry sand well above the waterline, but anywhere near surf or water a waterproof model is essential. See waterproof pinpointers.
