Not strictly necessary, but they meaningfully improve performance in most field conditions. Headphones let you hear faint, borderline signals that speaker audio at the same volume loses to wind and ambient noise. Over a full session at a site, the faint signals you hear with headphones but miss through the speaker can be the most interesting finds — deep coins, small jewelry, and targets with partial masking that produce subtle responses. Most experienced hunters use headphones consistently. For casual backyard use, the speaker works fine.
