Yes - for wet sand and surf zone detecting, a proper sand scoop with drainage holes is essential. Without one, recovering a target from packed wet sand is slow and often frustrating. The drainage holes allow wet sand to clear from the scoop quickly, concentrating the remaining material around the target for fast location with a pinpointer. A garden trowel or improvised tool does not have this drainage function and turns every recovery into a prolonged process. A quality sand scoop is the most underrated piece of beach detecting equipment.
