For wet sand and surf zone detecting — where most of the finds are — a long-handle scoop (30" or more) lets you work standing upright without the back fatigue of crouching over a short handle for a full session. For dry sand above the waterline and rocky beach areas where maneuverability matters more than reach, a short-handle or handheld scoop is more practical. Most serious beach hunters carry a long-handle stainless scoop for primary wet sand work and a short-handle tool for above-waterline recovery. See our full beach detecting guide for more on kit selection by beach type.
