A standard non-waterproof pinpointer will be damaged by submersion in water and may fail immediately or progressively after exposure to salt water. The salt specifically accelerates corrosion of non-waterproof electronic components. Taking a non-waterproof pinpointer into surf conditions risks destroying a $100+ accessory in the first session. Always use a pinpointer rated for the conditions you detect in - IP67 or higher for any beach and water use. The Garrett Pro-Pointer AT and Nokta Pointer are the standard recommendations for waterproof beach use.
