You should not swap coils underwater during a dive because opening the connector housing compromises the waterproof seal and risks flooding the detector electronics. The quick-change connection is designed for topside coil swaps between dives, not mid-dive field changes. Plan your coil selection based on the dive site conditions before entering the water: use the 5.5-inch coil for trashy swimming areas with dense target concentrations and the 8-inch coil for open-water wreck searches where coverage and depth penetration matter more. If you need to change coils mid-session, surface and perform the swap on the boat or beach where you can inspect the O-ring and connector for debris before resealing.
