If the cover tears during a hunt, you can continue detecting without it for the remainder of the session, but the coil shell will be exposed to abrasion. Many detectorists carry a spare cover in their finds pouch or backpack for this reason, especially when hunting rocky or root-heavy ground where tears are more likely. A torn cover does not affect coil function or waterproofing, it only removes the protective barrier. At the end of the hunt, remove the torn cover and install a new one before the next outing.
