The red 20-meter waterproof cap is forbidden for land use because its pressure-balancing mechanism, engineered to protect the remote underwater, causes the flexible keypad to swell and the loudspeaker membrane to stick when exposed to surface air temperature changes. Underwater, the cap equalizes internal and external pressure as depth changes. On land, surface temperature rises and falls alter ambient conditions, allowing the red cap to distort the keypad and speaker in ways that do not occur when the standard land cap is installed. Detectorists must remove the red cap immediately after exiting the water and reinstall the standard cap before resuming surface hunts to prevent remote malfunction and extend equipment lifespan.
