The XP 5mm classifier works with both wet and dry material, though wet classification is generally faster because water helps break apart clay and wash fine particles through the mesh. When working dry desert gravels or bench deposits, shake the classifier vigorously to move the fines through the screen, and consider adding a small amount of water if clay balls are clogging the mesh. Wet classification at creekside is the most common workflow, scoop gravel into the classifier, submerge it in the stream to saturate the material, then shake it to let the fine gold and black sand pass through while retaining larger rocks.
