How do I clean clay out of the 5mm mesh?

Clay and decomposed rock can clog the 5mm mesh when working certain bench deposits or creek gravels with high clay content. To clear the screen, submerge the classifier in water and agitate it to break apart the clay balls, or use a small brush to scrub the mesh from the underside. Some prospectors carry a spray bottle to wet down dry material before classification, which helps prevent clay from binding to the screen in the first place. After a session, rinse the classifier thoroughly and let it dry before stacking it with your other pans to prevent residual clay from hardening on the mesh.
