If you don't replace the battery when it starts failing, the coil's wireless link to the control unit will become increasingly unreliable until it stops functioning entirely. Early symptoms include intermittent disconnections and reduced pairing range, but as the battery voltage drops further, the coil may fail to power on or maintain a stable connection during hunts. A completely dead battery leaves the coil unusable until the battery is replaced. Continuing to use a coil with a weak battery also risks losing targets mid-hunt when the wireless link drops unexpectedly.
