You can sharpen both the Sampson shovel and the digging tool with a flat file or bench grinder when the edges lose their bite. The heat-treated steel holds an edge longer than mild-steel tools, but rocky ground and root strikes will eventually dull any blade. File at the original bevel angle, working from the spine toward the edge in smooth strokes. The serrated teeth on both tools can be touched up with a small triangular file to restore their cutting points.
