The Lesche Sampson comes with a pre-sharpened double-serrated edge from the factory, ready to use in the field without additional sharpening. The heat-treated blade holds the serrated pattern through repeated digging cycles, and the teeth are designed to bite into soil and roots on the first stroke. Over time you may want to touch up the serrations with a file if you're working extremely rocky ground, but most detectorists find the factory edge sufficient for typical relic and coin hunting conditions. The serrations do more of the cutting work than a smooth edge would, so the blade stays effective longer before any maintenance is needed.
