The Sampson shovel ships with a pre-sharpened serrated edge, and you can use it in the field immediately without additional sharpening. The serrated edge is ready to bite into compacted soil and roots on the first dig. Over time, the serrations will dull from contact with rocks and abrasive soil, and you can restore the edge with a flat file or a dedicated serration sharpener. The serrated pattern holds an edge longer than a smooth blade in root-heavy ground because the teeth concentrate cutting force on smaller contact points. We sharpen our Sampson shovels once per season under normal use, more frequently if we're working rocky ground or clay with embedded gravel. The aircraft-quality steel construction provides excellent edge retention across varied digging conditions.
