Rinse the blade with water after each hunt to remove soil, clay, and organic debris that can trap moisture and cause rust. Dry the blade with a rag before storing. The rust-resistant finish protects the steel, but trapped moisture in crevices can still cause surface corrosion over time. Store the shovel in a dry location, not in a damp garage or vehicle trunk where humidity accelerates rust. If the blade develops surface rust, scrub it with a wire brush or steel wool and apply a light coat of oil. The self-sharpening edge maintains its cutting performance without honing, but you can touch up the edge with a mill file if needed after years of heavy use.
