Round coils are the better choice for gold prospecting where monoloop technology is standard for PI detectors, and for open-field coverage work where maximum ground area per swing matters. In open clean fields with low trash density, a large round coil adds depth and coverage that elliptical coils of similar size do not match. For tight spaces, iron-heavy sites, and most park and relic detecting, an elliptical coil is more practical. See round coils and elliptical coils.
