Round Coils for Gold Prospecting

In gold prospecting, round monoloop coils are the standard for pulse induction detectors. Their design provides excellent depth and strong sensitivity to small gold, making them highly effective in mineralized ground where gold is typically found. Large Round Coils for Open Field Coverage

When should I use a round search coil instead of an elliptical?

Round coils are the better choice for gold prospecting where monoloop technology is standard for PI detectors, and for open-field coverage work where maximum ground area per swing matters. In open clean fields with low trash density, a large round coil adds depth and coverage that elliptical coils of similar size do not match. What is a monoloop search coil?

A monoloop coil uses a single winding that functions as both the transmitter and receiver — unlike DD coils which use separate transmit and receive windings in a D-configuration. Monoloop coils offer better depth and small-target sensitivity in moderate conditions, and are the standard configuration for pulse induction gold detectors in prospecting use. The tradeoff is more susceptibility to ground mineralization effects than DD coils — in heavily mineralized conditions, DD performance can exceed monoloop performance. For goldfield PI work in the conditions where PI machines are used, monoloop round coils are the established standard.

Will a larger round coil find deeper targets?

In open, clean ground — yes. A larger coil generates a wider and deeper electromagnetic field that reaches targets a smaller coil would miss. The practical limit is the signal-to-noise ratio in the ground conditions you hunt: in clean, moderately mineralized soil, a large coil adds meaningful depth. In heavily mineralized or trash-dense ground, the larger coil produces more ground noise and blended signals that can reduce effective performance despite the theoretical depth advantage. Are round coils better for beach detecting?

Round coils work on beaches and provide even depth coverage across the detection face. For open beach detecting where covering large areas is the priority and target density is low, a larger round coil adds ground coverage per session. For the surf zone and areas with higher target density, an elliptical coil may provide better maneuverability and target separation. Most beach hunters use the stock elliptical coil effectively; a round coil upgrade makes more sense for open-field prospecting and large-area survey work than for typical beach detecting.
