Apex Picks

Solid Steel and Premium Hickory Wood Construction

Every tool in the Apex Picks collection is proudly manufactured in the USA, featuring a heavy-duty solid steel head engineered to slice through roots, clay, and compacted gravel with minimal effort. Rather than utilizing weak synthetic shafts, these tools are built with premium hickory wood handles. Hickory provides unmatched natural strength and shock absorption, protecting your hands and reducing wrist fatigue during all-day swinging. We've fielded these picks in rocky desert washes, hard clay riverbanks, and old farm fields. Their meticulous weight distribution places the optimal balance point right where you need it, giving you total precision whether you are clearing away dirt from a sensitive relic hunting detector target or carefully lifting a coin plug out of manicured turf.

Choosing the Right Apex Tool for Your Detecting Style

Apex offers multiple configurations engineered around specialized ground conditions, handle length preferences, and specific target profiles. Models like the Extreme and Talon feature substantial solid steel heads designed to shatter stubborn caliche layers, break up hardpan, and clear deep bedrock crevices on tough desert claims. For deeper targets or when you prefer to dig without kneeling, longer 30-inch to 36-inch handles offer optimal leverage. Conversely, compact 12-inch or 18-inch models—like the nimble Apex Weasel and Ferret picks—excel in tight spots, making them incredibly easy to carry along on rigorous mountain treks.

Additionally, select configurations come equipped with integrated, high-powered super magnets right on the head. These allow gold prospectors and relic hunters to instantly pluck hot rocks and iron trash out of loose dirt without sorting through the debris by hand.

Durability for Relic, Coin, and Gold Prospecting Hunts

Apex picks are built to survive thousands of digs without bending, cracking, or losing their edge. The high-carbon steel blade can be resharpened with a file or grinder when it dulls, extending the tool's working life well beyond cheaper stamped-steel alternatives. The aluminum shaft resists corrosion in saltwater environments, freshwater rivers, and alkaline desert soil. We've seen Apex tools come back from multi-day prospecting trips covered in mud and rock dust, and after a rinse and a quick edge touch-up, they're ready for the next hunt. The weld points and fasteners are reinforced to handle the torque you apply when prying a rock or breaking through a root ball. If you run metal detectors in demanding conditions, an Apex pick matches the durability standard you expect from your detector and coil.

Pairing Apex Picks with Your Detector Setup

Apex tools work alongside any detector brand or coil size. If you hunt with a large coil on open ground, a longer pick gives you the reach to dig without kneeling as often. Smaller coils in trashy sites pair well with a compact digger that fits into your finds pouch or belt loop. Gold prospectors running high-gain PI or VLF detectors on mineralized ground benefit from a pick that can scrape away overburden and expose bedrock crevices where nuggets settle. The flat blade side doubles as a scoop for transferring loose material into a classifier or pan. Relic hunters working iron-heavy Civil War sites or colonial homesteads use the pointed end to probe around a target and confirm depth before committing to a full plug. Coin shooters appreciate the clean plug cuts that make it easier to replace the turf and leave the site looking untouched.
