Open-Frame Metal Detector Search Coils

Why Coil Makers Cut Away the Shell

The winding in a search coil follows the rim; the middle of a solid face is mostly empty plastic. Remove it and the coil sheds real weight exactly where weight hurts most, out at the end of the shaft. On small coils the difference is minor. On a large coil it is the difference between a machine you swing all day and one you put down at lunch, which is why big deep-seeking and goldfield coils are so often open frames.

Water Changes the Math

A sealed solid shell is buoyant and drags: underwater it wants to float, it pushes water with every sweep, and you fight both all session. An open frame lets water flow through the gaps, so it sweeps with far less effort and stays where you put it. If you hunt the surf line or dive, the open build earns its keep fast; pair it with a machine from our waterproof detectors range and mind the coil's own depth rating.

The Grass and Stubble Problem

The honest downside shows up on land. Wet grass, weeds, and cut stubble catch on spokes instead of sliding under a smooth face, so you end up dragging vegetation instead of gliding over it. Worse, a stiff stalk striking an open spoke right beside the winding can register as a false knock on a hot machine, the kind of ghost signal that has you digging air. In plowed and stubble fields a solid coil is usually the calmer choice.

Choosing by Site

Open frame for big-coil days, water work, and clean pasture; solid for stubble, wet grass, and rough scrubbing ground. Shape is a separate decision that works the same in either build: round for maximum depth per size, elliptical for separation. Goldfield hunters running big open monos will find the rest of their kit under gold detectors, and the full coil range is in all search coils.
