Standard Handle Diggers, Shovels & Picks

Standard straight handles are the default grip in the digging world, and this is the largest group of digging tools we stock. The range runs from short hand diggers and trowels up to full-length shovels and prospecting picks: no crossbar, no loop, just a straight shaft you can choke up on, swing hard, or strap flat against a pack. If you are not sure which handle style suits you, start here and treat the shaped handles as refinements for specific ground.

What Counts as a Standard Handle

A standard handle is a straight shaft from end to end, whether that shaft is eight inches of rubber grip on a hand digger or a full-length pole on a field shovel. The simplicity has real advantages: nothing sticks out to snag brush or a finds pouch, the tool packs flat against a backpack or in a shovel holster, and there is one less joint or weld to work loose over years of prying. It is also the easiest handle to hold a dozen different ways, which matters more than it sounds when you dig a hundred plugs in a day.

Hand Diggers Do Most of the Recovery Work

Most coins and small targets in parks and yards sit within the first several inches, and that is hand digger territory. You kneel, cut a plug around the target, flip it, and check the hole with a pinpointer while the other hand keeps the digger working. A straight grip keeps the blade in line with your forearm, so a serrated edge saws through sod cleanly and the plug drops back with almost no trace. If parks and manicured lawns are your usual ground, a standard handle digger is the tool you will wear out first.

Shovels and Picks on a Straight Shaft

Move to plowed fields, cellar holes, or gold country and the straight shaft scales up with you. A full-size shovel with a straight handle lets you slide your grip anywhere along it: high to drive the blade, low to lever a deep plug. Prospecting picks belong here too, since a pick swings from a straight handle by definition, and the same shaft doubles as a pry bar in rocky washes. If your hunting leans toward gold prospecting, a pick with a plain straight handle is standard kit for a reason.

When a Shaped Handle Earns Its Place

Shaped handles are answers to specific problems. A T-handle adds a crossbar for two-hand twisting power and boot drive on deep plugs and root-laced ground. A D-handle closes the grip for gloved hands and pull-back leverage in clay. A ball handle caps a smaller digger for one-handed work. If none of those problems sound like your ground, stay with the straight handle and put the attention into blade quality instead. The full range lives in all shovels, diggers and picks.
