What actually matters in a kids' detector

Parents call us about features. Kids care about one thing: did it beep, and did I get to dig something cool. The detectors that keep a kid hooked get a few things right.

• Weight, first and last. A heavy detector is one a kid puts down after ten minutes. Anything we'd hand a child is light in the arms, with a shaft that shortens for a small kid and grows as they do. The Nokta Midi Hoard and Minelab GO-FIND were built around that.

Which detector for which age

Age is the fastest way to land on the right one.

• Little kids, about 4 to 7. Keep it ultralight and dead simple. The Nokta Midi Hoard is where most families start: waterproof, kid-sized, and honest about what's under the coil.

This is the part we wish more parents heard before they bought. A cheap "kids metal detector" off a marketplace listing isn't a small detector, it's a toy shaped like one. It can't tell a nail from a nickel, so the kid digs junk, gets bored, and writes off the hobby. A genuine entry detector costs more up front, finds things worth keeping, lasts for years, and usually saves you from buying a second one. Spend once and buy real.
