Who the Quest Q30+ suits

What we like about the Quest Q30+ is that it is a relatively approachable detector with enough adjustment for someone who expects to progress beyond casual detecting. It suits someone who wants to search parks, older properties, fields and beaches without moving straight into an expensive detector.

Quest Q30+ features and controls

The Q30+ has four search modes: Park, Field, Beach and Gold. Targets read on 99 Target ID numbers with a 25-segment signal scale and a depth reader, and you can set threshold, tones and FeSen. Ground balance is automatic or manual, and a frequency button helps when another detector or a power line causes interference. Volume has 15 levels, the LED backlight has two brightness levels, and vibration mode signals targets underwater, where a speaker is hard to hear. It also offers increased search efficiency in saltwater.

The built-in 3000 mAh lithium-polymer battery runs about 30 hours and charges through a magnetic connector. The telescopic shaft collapses to 80 cm (31.5 inch) and extends to 130 cm (51 inch), the armrest has a support, and the detector weighs 1.15 kg (2.5 lb).

Settings that matter on the Quest Q30+

Search programs and discrimination: picture an older park with coins, aluminum trash and rusty iron in the same patch of grass. You want useful target information while rejecting some of the junk. We like starting from the factory program that fits the site and learning the finer adjustments over time. We would not change several settings at once.

Ground balance: walk from ordinary park soil into more mineralized ground and a detector can turn unstable or start giving false signals. Learn the proper ground balance procedure in the manual rather than assuming maximum sensitivity always gives the best results.

Wireless audio: on a day of kneeling to recover coin after coin, losing the headphone cable is a real convenience. Wireless audio does not add depth, though; it only makes the hunt easier.

One mistake to avoid with the Quest Q30+

The mistake we see is describing the Q30+ as a simultaneous multi-frequency detector: it is a single-frequency 14 kHz VLF detector. When you take it underwater, use audio equipment made for submersion.
