Fisher Metal Detector Families Explained

Fisher's current range falls into four groups: the F-Series for coins and relics, the Gold Bug series for gold, the water detectors and the Gemini-3. The family decides the frequency, how far the detector can go into water and which coils fit, so pick the family first and the model second.

F-Series: F11, F19, F22, F44 and F75

The F11, F22 and F44 share a 7.69 kHz VLF platform for coins and relics. The F11 is the simplest, with visual target icons and no numeric target ID. Its control box is not waterproof, so a rain cover is recommended. The F22 adds a 1 to 99 numeric target ID and FeTone iron audio, and its control box is weatherproof but not submersible. The F44 adds an All Metal mode, manual ground balance with Ground Grab, an adjustable backlight and an 11 inch coil. The F19 runs at 19 kHz with a 40-point iron discrimination scale and FeTone. The F75 runs at 13 kHz with DST mode to suppress electromagnetic interference, FASTGRAB ground balance with manual override, and Discrimination, Motion All-Metal and Static All-Metal modes on four AA batteries rated for about 40 hours. The F75 LTD adds Boost and Cache modes and comes with an 11 inch and a 5 inch coil.

Gold Bug series: Gold Bug, Gold Bug Pro, Gold Bug DP and Gold Bug 2

The Gold Bug, Gold Bug Pro and Gold Bug DP run at 19 kHz. The Gold Bug has All Metal and Discrimination modes, Ground Grab ground balance and a 5 inch DD coil on a 9V battery, at 2.5 lb. The Gold Bug Pro has Ground Grab plus manual ground balance and a numeric target ID, and runs 15 to 20 hours on a 9V battery. First Texas lists the Gold Bug DP as a configuration of the Gold Bug Pro; our Gold Bug DP listing pairs it with an 11 inch DD elliptical waterproof coil. The Gold Bug 2 runs at 71 kHz for the smallest gold, with manual ground balance, Normal, Boost and Iron Discrimination modes, a 6.5 inch or 10 inch elliptical coil, two 9V batteries rated for 25 to 35 hours and a weight of 2.9 lb.

Water detectors: 1280X, CZ-21 and Impulse AQ

The 1280X Aquanaut is a 2.4 kHz VLF detector, fully submersible to 250 ft (76 m), with automatic ground balance, permanently attached waterproof headphones and a 10.5 inch coil. It runs 60 to 80 hours on eight AA batteries and weighs 5.4 lb with the headphones. The CZ-21 is also submersible to 250 ft (76 m) and runs on two frequencies, 5 and 15 kHz, with 3-tone audio target ID, manual ground balance, permanently attached waterproof headphones and four 9V batteries. The Impulse AQ Limited is Fisher's pulse induction detector, made in the USA, with All Metal, Tone, Mute and Volcanic Sand modes, a 12.5 inch mono coil and a 2200 mAh NiMH battery rated for about 3.5 hours. First Texas rates it waterproof to about 3 ft (1 m), so we recommend it for beaches and wading rather than diving; for diving, the 1280X and CZ-21 are the Fisher choices.

Deep seeking: Gemini-3

The Gemini-3 is a two-box detector: a transmitter and a receiver at 81.92 kHz, with four modes (Narrow Scan Inductive, Wide Scan Inductive, Inductive Trace and Conductive Trace) and an analog meter for signal strength. First Texas says it locates large targets such as 55-gallon drums at depths up to 10 feet, deeper for larger objects. Each box runs on eight AA batteries, and the complete system weighs 7.5 lb (3.4 kg). We recommend it for caches, buried pipes and cables and other large deep objects, not for coin hunting.

Coils, Pinpointers and Parts

Fisher coils fit only the detectors they are made for, so check the models named in each coil listing before you order. For recovery, the Fisher F-Pulse is a pulse induction pinpointer, submersible to 6 feet for up to 1 hour, with three sensitivity levels, audio and vibration alerts and 16 frequency-shift channels, so it can be shifted away from your detector. How does the Fisher F75 compare to the Minelab EQUINOX 900?

The Fisher F75 and the Minelab EQUINOX 900 differ most in frequency and waterproofing. The Fisher F75 is a single-frequency 13 kHz VLF detector with DST mode to suppress electrical interference, FASTGRAB ground balance with manual override and a Static All-Metal mode; its coil is waterproof but its control box is not, so keep the control box out of the rain. It weighs 3.5 lb. The Minelab EQUINOX 900 runs Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency and is IP68 waterproof to 5 m (16 ft). We recommend the F75 for dry land relic and coin sites, and the EQUINOX 900 if beaches or water are part of your detecting. Is the Fisher Gold Bug Pro good for beginners?

Yes, the Fisher Gold Bug Pro is a good first gold detector if you are willing to learn ground balance. Its Ground Grab button sets the ground balance at the press of a button, manual ground balance is there when you want to fine-tune it, and it has All Metal and Discrimination modes with a numeric target ID. The Fisher Gold Bug Pro runs at 19 kHz on one 9V battery. The standard Gold Bug is the other 19 kHz choice, with Ground Grab, All Metal and Discrimination and a 5 inch DD coil. Are Fisher metal detectors and Teknetics metal detectors the same?

No, Fisher and Teknetics are separate brands with their own models, but both are made by the same company, First Texas Products, LLC of El Paso, Texas, which lists both lines in its catalog.
