The XP HF2 is a 9.5 x 5 in (24 x 13 cm) elliptical wireless search coil for the XP Deus II, and XP lists it as compatible with the XP ICON and XP ICONX as well. It is XP's high-frequency FMF coil: it runs Fast Multi-Frequency up to 90 kHz and single frequencies up to 120 kHz, where XP's standard round FMF coils top out at 45 kHz. XP's part number for it is DELLFMFHP.
The HF2 suits owners who hunt small gold, thin hammered coins, small jewelry and low-conductive relics, and anyone working iron-heavy sites or tight spots where a round coil will not fit. If you mostly hunt large silver and deep relics in open ground, the standard 9 in or 11 in FMF coil is the better buy, because those coils reach down to 4 kHz. Both are in our wireless search coils collection. Owners of the original XP Deus or the XP ORX need XP's earlier HF elliptical coil instead, which XP lists for those two detectors; the HF2 is a Deus II generation coil and does not work with them.
How the HF2 frequencies work
XP built the HF2 around three main frequency ranges, chosen on the Deus II with the FREQ MAX setting: 9 to 27 kHz, 17 to 53 kHz and 17 to 90 kHz. Each range has 7 wide shifts, which gives 21 multi-frequency choices in all. In single-frequency (mono) mode the HF2 offers 49 frequencies from 9 to 120 kHz. For comparison, XP lists its 9 in, 11 in and 13x11 in FMF coils at 4 to 45 kHz.
What that means in the field: higher frequencies respond more strongly to small and thin targets such as gold nuggets, small hammered silver, fine chains and lead shot. They give up some reach on large, high-conductive targets, which is why the HF2 is a second coil for most owners rather than the only coil. Moving a step within a range is also the usual fix when power lines or another detector nearby make the coil noisy.
These figures are for the Deus II. The ICON and ICONX remotes have fewer programs and frequency options than the Deus II, so the HF2 runs within what your remote offers.

Where the elliptical HF2 earns its place
The narrow 9.5 x 5 in footprint is the reason to pick the HF2 over a round coil in tight places. It slides between foundation stones, along fence lines, under brush and into crevices on bedrock, where a 9 in round coil hangs up or cannot reach. A narrow coil also sees less ground at a time, so a good target lying beside a nail is less likely to be hidden by it. Our metal detector coil guide explains how coil size and shape trade coverage for separation.
On iron-heavy sites, use the HF2 with the Deus II Silencer setting. XP's version 3.0 software added negative Silencer values, which XP says help bring out good targets that are masked by nearby iron. For gold, XP's version 3.1 notes describe a reworked Gold Field program with greater sensitivity on small nuggets, down to 0.01 g.
We tell Deus II owners to keep their round FMF coil for open ground and covering a field, and to put the HF2 on when the site is trashy, cramped or the targets are small. Because the HF2 comes on its own lower stem, changing coils means changing lower stems, not remounting a coil.
The HF2 is a VLF coil, so in heavily mineralized goldfields where nuggets sit deep, a pulse induction or dedicated gold detector may reach further. Our gold detector buying guide compares the options.
Two detectors from one Deus II
XP notes that a second coil can work as a second detector. With a Deus II, you can run your first coil from the remote control and control the HF2 from WS6 headphones, so two people can detect at the same time.
Battery and charging
The HF2 has its own lithium battery. XP rates it at 10 hours or a little more, depending on frequency and power settings: the coil page gives 10 hours and XP's HF2 launch page says over 10. XP describes the battery as swappable, so you can carry a charged spare for a long day out, and its HF2 page mentions a new charging system with an LED indicator.

Compatibility and software
- XP Deus II: remote control software version 3.0 or later. XP added HF2 support in version 3.0. XP also requires WS6, WSA II and WSA II XL headphones to run the same software version as the remote, or they will not work together.
- XP ICON and ICONX: XP lists the HF2 among the coils both detectors work with.
- XP Deus (original) and ORX: not compatible. They use XP's earlier HF elliptical coil.
Every XP part sorted by detector is on our XP parts and accessories by detector model page.
