Nokta SX24 9.5x6 in DD Search Coil for Simplex LITE, Simplex ULTRA and FindX Pro

The Nokta SX24 is a 9.5x6 in (24x15 cm) waterproof Double-D search coil, Nokta part 17000178, for the Nokta Simplex LITE, Simplex ULTRA and FindX Pro. It is the small coil in Nokta's SX coil family. The Simplex ULTRA and FindX Pro ship with the 11 in SX28, so for those owners the SX24 is the coil you add for trashy parks, iron-heavy relic sites and spots where an 11 in coil will not fit. For a standard Simplex LITE, which ships with the SX24, this is the factory replacement coil. The coil cover and mounting hardware are included. Who the SX24 coil is for, and who should buy a different coil

Buy the SX24 if you hunt sites where targets sit close together: old parks, tot lots, house lots with nail scatter, and wooded sites with roots and stumps. The smaller footprint sees less ground per sweep, so it separates a coin from a nail an inch away better than the 11 in SX28, and it swings lighter on a long day. If you hunt open fields and beaches and want more depth and coverage per pass, stay with the SX28 that came on your Simplex ULTRA or FindX Pro, or step up to the 13.5x12.5 in SX35. If you own a Simplex LITE and want more depth, the SX28 is the upgrade, not this coil.

Key features and what they mean in use

• 9.5x6 in semi-elliptical footprint. The narrow nose reaches between foundation stones, fence posts and playground equipment, and the elliptical shape keeps a usable sweep width for covering ground.
• Double-D winding. The detection field is a narrow blade front to back, which is what gives a DD coil its target separation in trash and its stability over mineralized soil and wet salt sand.
• Waterproof construction. The coil is built for submersion with the detector; the Simplex and FindX Pro are rated to 5 m (16 ft), so you can hunt the wet sand and the wash without worrying about the coil.
• Open-frame design. Less plastic in the center means less weight on the end of the shaft and less sand and water carried along on each sweep.
• Coil cover and hardware in the box. The cover takes the abrasion from gravel and shell hash, and the bolt and washers let you mount it on the lower shaft with no extra parts.

Compatibility

Nokta lists the SX24 for the Simplex ULTRA, FindX Pro and Simplex LITE. The Simplex BT belongs to the same generation and ships with the SX28 from the same coil family. The SX24 is not the coil for the original Simplex+, which uses Nokta's SP-series coils, and it is not listed for the Nokta Legend, which takes the LG-series coils, or for the Score series. The coil plugs straight into the detector's coil connector; there is no firmware update or coil setting to change.

Where the SX24 works well and where it does not

Trashy parks and old house lots

This is the SX24's home. On a Simplex ULTRA or FindX Pro, swapping from the SX28 to the SX24 lets you pick single targets out of nail scatter and bottle-cap carpets that the larger coil reads as one blended signal. Slow the sweep down and let the narrow DD field do the separating.

Wet sand and saltwater beaches

The DD pattern runs quieter in wet salt sand than a concentric coil, and the waterproof build handles the wash. You give up coverage per pass against the SX28, so on a wide, clean beach the larger coil gets through the sand faster. Reach for the SX24 on towel-line trash and in rocky coves.

Mineralized relic ground

Over red clay and hot rocks a smaller DD coil is easier to keep stable at higher sensitivity. The SX24 will not match the SX28 or SX35 on a deep, isolated relic in clean ground, but on a worked-over camp where the remaining finds sit among iron it recovers targets the big coil masks.

Open fields and depth hunting

Not the SX24's job. A 9.5x6 in coil gives up depth and coverage to an 11 in or 13.5 in coil on the same detector. If most of your hunting is plowed fields or wide beaches, keep the SX28 on or look at the SX35.

How the SX24 differs from the other Nokta SX coils

SX28 (11 in round, part 17000179): the stock coil on the Simplex ULTRA, Simplex BT and FindX Pro. More depth and coverage; less separation in trash. The right coil for most open-ground hunting.

SX35 (13.5x12.5 in, part 17000180): the large coil for depth and fast coverage on fields and beaches. Heaviest of the three and the least suited to trash.

SX24 (9.5x6 in, this coil): the small coil for separation, tight spots and a lighter swing. Buy it as a second coil for a ULTRA or FindX Pro, or as the replacement coil for a standard Simplex LITE.
