The Fisher F-Pulse is a pulse induction pinpointer that runs on two AA batteries and is waterproof to 6 feet. Pulse induction is the reason to choose it over the VLF pinpointers most people carry: it stays stable in wet salt sand, black sand and heavily mineralized soil where a Garrett Pro-Pointer AT or Nokta pinpointer chatters and has to be constantly retuned. It ships with a belt holster, works alongside any brand of detector, and carries Fisher's 2-year warranty.

    F-Pulse or Pro-Pointer AT?

If you hunt saltwater beaches, the F-Pulse is the better pinpointer: it does not false on wet salt sand, and it has 16 frequency-shift positions so it will not interfere with your detector. It is also the pinpointer to buy if you are tired of 9-volt batteries; two AAs give about 25 hours on alkalines and about 50 on lithium AAs, and you can run rechargeable NiMH cells. The Garrett Pro-Pointer AT wins on depth rating (20 feet versus 6) and on the size of its user base, so if you dive or wade past chest depth, or you want the pinpointer every club member can help you with, buy the Garrett. For dry-land park and relic hunting the two are close; read our pinpointer buying guide for the full comparison across brands.

Using the F-Pulse in the field

One button does everything. Press to power on, and the pinpointer tunes itself to the ground; if it chatters in hot soil or wet sand, hold it against the ground and press again to retune, which cancels the ground signal. Three sensitivity levels let you turn it down for coins in trashy ground or up for small gold. As you close on a target the beep and vibration speed up, and the tip and the side of the shaft both detect, so you can scrape the hole wall as well as probe the bottom. Choose vibrate-only for quiet sites. The LED flashlight can be left on or off, the lost-pinpointer alarm sounds if you set it down and walk off, and auto shutdown saves the batteries if you forget. The ruler moulded into the housing reads depth in inches and centimeters. Rinse it in fresh water after saltwater use and check the O-ring on the battery cap before each submersion; the 6-foot rating is for up to one hour.

Does the Fisher F-Pulse work on saltwater beaches?

Yes, the Fisher F-Pulse works on saltwater beaches, and that is its main advantage: it uses pulse induction rather than VLF, so wet salt sand and black sand do not make it false or chatter the way they do with most other pinpointers. It is waterproof to 6 feet for up to an hour, so wading and wet-sand recovery are fine. Compare it with the rest of our pinpointers if you mostly hunt dry ground.

What batteries does the Fisher F-Pulse use and how long do they last?

The Fisher F-Pulse uses two AA batteries, not a 9-volt, and they are not included. Fisher rates runtime at about 25 hours on alkaline AAs, about 50 hours on lithium AAs, and about 15 hours on rechargeable NiMH cells, so a spare pair in the pouch covers a long weekend. The O-ring-sealed end cap makes swaps quick in the field. Find spare batteries and holsters among our Fisher accessories.

Will the Fisher F-Pulse interfere with my metal detector?

No, the Fisher F-Pulse should not interfere with your metal detector once you set it correctly: it has 16 frequency-shift positions, so if you hear crosstalk with your detector you step the F-Pulse to another frequency and the interference stops. It is designed to work alongside any brand of detector, from Garrett and Minelab to Nokta and XP. Keep it holstered while sweeping and power it on only at the hole.
