What "Waterproof" Actually Means Underwater
This is where buyers get burned. "Waterproof" spans everything from a coil that tolerates wet grass to a sealed housing rated for wreck diving, and the wrong assumption floods a control box. Look for an IP68 rating with a clearly stated depth limit, and confirm it covers the whole machine, control box included, not just the coil.

The second thing that separates a true underwater detector from a land machine that happens to be sealed is how it handles salt. Saltwater is conductive and constantly signals to a single-frequency VLF machine. The detectors below solve it two ways: simultaneous multi-frequency (BBS, FMF, Multi-IQ, SMF) that cancels the salt response, or pulse induction (PI) that ignores mineralization almost entirely. In practice that also decides how much tuning you do. Salt water, fresh water and mineralized lake beds each want a different ground balance, and multi-frequency machines handle the adjustment automatically where a single-frequency machine needs it set by hand every time the bottom changes.
Rated depth is not detection depth
The number on the box is how deep the machine can go. How far it reads into the bottom depends on target size, coil and mineralization: in typical underwater conditions, expect coin-sized targets at 8 to 12 in and larger jewelry at 12 to 18 in. A 250 ft rating does not detect deeper than a 16 ft rating; it just survives deeper water.
