Choosing a metal detector comes down to where you hunt, what you're hunting for, and how often you'll actually use it, not what's trending in a YouTube thumbnail. How to Choose a Metal Detector

Three questions answer most of the buying decision. Walk through them in order before clicking into any of the specific guides below, you'll know which guide to read by the time you're done.

1. Where will you hunt?

Salt beaches, mineralized relic ground, gold country, parks, and freshwater rivers each demand different technology. Single-frequency VLF detectors are fine for parks and dry sand but break down on wet salt-water beaches. Multi-frequency handles almost everything, the dominant technology in modern detecting. Pulse induction excels at gold prospecting and salt water but gives up the target ID accuracy you'd want for coin and relic hunting. If you'll hunt more than one kind of terrain, a multi-frequency machine is almost always the right answer.

2. What's your budget?

The biggest performance jump in the hobby happens between $400 and $1,000, that's where you cross from machines that work in good conditions to machines that work in any conditions. Below $400 is fine for parks and learning the hobby. Above $1,000 buys flagship features (faster recovery speed, more frequencies, better wireless audio, deeper detection in bad ground) that start mattering once you're hunting harder sites. Match the spend to how often you'll actually go out.

3. Single brand or all-terrain platform?

Some detectorists buy into a single brand ecosystem, usually Minelab or XP, because the coils, headphones, and accessories carry across the lineup as you upgrade. Others pick the single best detector for one specific use case (gold, beach, relic) regardless of brand. Both work. Minelab leads on simultaneous multi-frequency (Multi-IQ) and salt-beach performance. The Equinox and Manticore platforms are the benchmark for all-terrain detecting. The GPX 6000 is the dominant high-end gold machine. They charge for it, and most of the time it's worth it.

Garrett wins on simplicity, toughness, and serviceability. The ACE and AT lines have powered the hobby for two decades. Less cutting-edge tech, more rock-solid reliability, the detector you can hand to a friend without a 30-minute tutorial.

Nokta delivers near-flagship capability at half the price and keeps improving every machine via free firmware updates after you buy. The Simplex set the standard for waterproof beginner detectors. The Legend competes head-to-head with the Equinox 900 at a meaningfully lower price.

Metal Detector Comparison Guides

Once you've narrowed your shortlist to two machines, spec sheets stop helping, both will sound impressive on paper. The right machine for you depends on which weaknesses you can live with. Watch for these tradeoffs in every comparison:

  • Target ID stability matters more than raw depth. A detector that gives a steady "76" on a wheat penny at 6 inches is more useful than one that pings depth at 9 inches but jumps between "63" and "82" on every sweep.
  • Recovery speed shows up at trashy sites. If a detector can't separate a nail from a button at the same depth, you'll dig 20 nails for every find on iron-loaded ground.
  • Audio quality matters more than most people realize. Three-tone audio gives you fast intuition; full-tone audio gives you maximum information. Wireless audio varies wildly between brands, XP leads, Minelab is close, others lag.
  • Ergonomics over four hours separates the detectors you keep from the ones you sell on Facebook Marketplace. A pound of weight difference is huge by hour three.

How does a metal detector work? In short: a transmit coil generates an electromagnetic field, that field induces a current in any metal object below the coil, and a receive coil picks up the resulting signal. The brand and model matters less than understanding the three variables that control performance, once you do, you'll make smarter buying decisions, settle the right machine in five minutes instead of an hour, and dig less iron. Most "advanced" detecting tips reduce to applied physics: what frequency does to depth, what soil does to signal, what coil shape does to footprint.

Frequency. Lower frequencies (4–8 kHz) penetrate deep but miss small high-conductive targets. Higher frequencies (15+ kHz) light up small gold and jewelry but lose depth on coins. Multi-frequency runs several at once and lets the detector pick the best signal for each target, which is why it dominates the modern lineup.

Ground balance. Mineralized soil masks signal. Auto ground balance handles 80% of conditions; manual ground balance lets you fine-tune the other 20%, the salt beaches, gold country, and iron-loaded relic fields where most detectorists give up.

Coils. Bigger coils go deeper and cover more ground but lose target separation in trashy sites. Smaller coils unmask iron-laden ground but cover less. DD coils outperform concentrics in mineralized soil. Match the coil to the site, not the brand.
