What Is a Multi-Frequency Metal Detector?
A traditional VLF detector runs a single frequency, which forces a trade-off: low frequencies reach deeper on high-conductivity targets like silver, while high frequencies hit small, low-conductivity targets like gold and fine jewelry. A simultaneous multi-frequency detector removes that compromise by transmitting and receiving multiple frequencies at once and combining the data in real time. The result is broader sensitivity across target types, more reliable target ID, and — most importantly — stable operation on wet salt sand and mineralized ground, where single-frequency machines get noisy. For one detector that does nearly everything well, multi-frequency is the modern answer.
Multi-IQ vs. FMF vs. SMF: Same Idea, Different Names
The three big brands market simultaneous multi-frequency under their own names, and they're more alike than different. Minelab Multi-IQ (and Multi-IQ+ on the Manticore) powers the Equinox 700 and 900, Vanquish, and X-TERRA ELITE, and is the most widely used SMF platform in the hobby. XP's FMF (Fast Multi Frequency) drives the DEUS II. Nokta's SMF (Simultaneous Multi Frequency) runs the Legend. All three deliver the core multi-frequency advantages; the differences come down to ergonomics, software, tones, and coil options rather than a fundamental gap in the technology. Choose on feel, features, and budget — not on the acronym.
Who Should Buy a Multi-Frequency Detector?
Multi-frequency is the right call if you hunt saltwater beaches (where it's close to essential), if you work variable or mineralized soil and don't want to keep re-tuning, or if you simply want one versatile machine for coins, relics, jewelry, and the occasional beach trip. If you hunt only dry, mild ground for coins and relics, a good single-frequency VLF detector is still excellent and more affordable. And for the deepest gold in the harshest ground, pulse induction is the specialist tool.

Multi-Frequency vs. VLF vs. Pulse Induction
Three technologies cover the whole hobby. Single-frequency VLF is simple, affordable, and great for general coin and relic hunting on dry land. Simultaneous multi-frequency is the versatile all-rounder — the best balance of depth, target ID, and saltwater stability. Pulse induction ignores severe mineralization to reach the deepest gold and works superbly in surf, at the cost of target discrimination. Some machines even blend approaches — see our hybrid SMF-PI detectors. Match the technology to your ground and targets, and the right category becomes obvious.
Multi-Frequency Detector FAQs
Is a multi-frequency metal detector worth it?
For most hunters, yes — especially on saltwater beaches and variable soil, where simultaneous multi-frequency gives better depth, more reliable target ID, and far less noise than a single frequency, with little manual tuning. If you only hunt dry, mild ground, a single-frequency VLF can serve you well for less money.
What's the difference between Multi-IQ, FMF, and SMF?
They're brand names for the same core technology — simultaneous multi-frequency. Multi-IQ is Minelab's (Equinox, Manticore, Vanquish), FMF is XP's (DEUS II), and SMF is Nokta's (Legend). All transmit multiple frequencies at once; the real differences are ergonomics, software, and features, not the underlying approach.
Is multi-frequency better than single frequency?
For versatility and tough conditions, yes — it covers a wider range of targets and stays stable on salt and mineralized ground. For straightforward coin and relic hunting on dry land, a quality single-frequency VLF is still very capable and usually cheaper.
Are multi-frequency detectors good for the beach?
They're one of the best choices for beach hunting. Simultaneous multi-frequency handles wet salt sand and the surf line with far less interference than single-frequency machines, which is why models like the Minelab Equinox and Manticore are beach favorites. See our beach detectors.
