Dune Scoops

Dune Scoops Sand Scoops for Beach and Surf Metal Detecting

Dune Scoops are heavy-duty sand scoops built for the people who hunt the hardest ground there is: wet sand, dry dunes, and the surf line. This collection features galvanized and long handle sand scoops designed to sift targets out of the sand fast, so you recover more rings, coins, and jewelry before the next wave fills the hole. If you detect beaches, shorelines, or tot lots, a purpose-built scoop is the single biggest upgrade to your recovery speed.

What Is a Sand Scoop and Why You Need One

A sand scoop is a perforated digging tool used in metal detecting to scoop up sand and let it sift away through the holes, leaving your target behind in the basket. On a beach, digging by hand is slow and unreliable, and small targets like gold rings slip right through your fingers. A sand scoop turns recovery into a one-motion process: scoop, shake, and your find is left in the basket. The hole size of the perforations controls what you keep, and the handle length controls how much bending you do over a long hunt.

Galvanized and Long Handle Sand Scoops

Dune Scoops are made from galvanized metal, which adds a protective coating that helps the scoop stand up to salt water and wet sand far better than bare steel. The long handle versions let you scoop and sift without crouching, which saves your back across hours of beach hunting and makes them ideal for shallow water and the wet sand zone where the best targets concentrate. The result is a scoop that survives the beach environment and keeps you hunting longer.

Dry Sand, Wet Sand, and the Surf Line

Where you hunt should guide which scoop you choose. Dry, loose sand sifts easily, so most scoops work well above the high tide line. Wet, compacted sand near the water is heavier and demands a stronger basket and a sturdy handle, which is exactly where a galvanized long handle scoop earns its keep. If you wade into the surf, look for a scoop with larger drainage holes so water and sand clear quickly between waves. Matching the scoop to the conditions is what separates a frustrating hunt from a productive one.

How to Choose the Right Sand Scoop

Three things determine whether a scoop fits the way you hunt:

• Hole size: Smaller holes keep small gold and thin chains but sift slower. Larger holes clear sand fast and suit coins and larger jewelry. Many beach hunters pick a hole size around their most common target.
• Handle length: Long handle scoops save your back and reach into shallow water without bending. Short or hand scoops are lighter, pack smaller, and work well for dry sand and detailed recovery.
• Material and coating: Galvanized and stainless steel scoops resist salt corrosion, which matters on any saltwater beach. Rinse with fresh water after each hunt to extend the life of any scoop.

If you hunt saltwater beaches regularly, a galvanized or stainless long handle scoop is the most reliable all-round choice.
