The Apex Pick Extreme 24-inch is the heaviest pick in the Apex line, built for prospectors and relic hunters who dig in caliche, hardpan, and bedrock crevices where a lighter pick bounces. Its 12 by 4.5 inch solid steel head is 8mm thick, a full 2mm thicker than the Talon and Badger series, on a 24-inch hickory handle. This version carries one super magnet shrouded in the head, so hot rocks and iron trash lift straight out of the loose dirt instead of being sorted by hand. Every Apex pick is made in Idaho, USA.

Which Apex pick do you actually need?

The Extreme earns its weight, about 5 pounds, in tough ground: cemented desert gravels, hardpan, and prying at bedrock cracks. If most of your digging is loose soil, decomposed granite, or shallow relic sites, the Apex Talon Stubby 24-inch has the same head footprint at 6mm and roughly a pound less to carry all day. The 24-inch handle is the compact, kneel-and-dig length; if you want to break ground standing up, the same head is available as the Extreme 30-inch or Extreme 36-inch. Magnet count is the other choice: one magnet is enough to check a target or clear the occasional boot tack; the three-magnet Extreme 24 is for trashy ground where you are pulling iron out of every scoop. Using the magnet in the field

Get a signal, take a scoop with the pick, then pass the magnet side of the head through the loose pile. Hot rocks with magnetic iron content and ferrous trash jump to the head; what stays behind is what your detector is actually hearing. In a fresh dig hole, the magnet also sweeps out loose ferrous flakes that would otherwise keep the pinpointer chattering. The magnets are recessed into the head, so they do not interfere with the point or the chisel end when you are breaking ground.
