The Garrett ACE 400 metal detector is the top model in the Garrett ACE Series metal detectors lineup, and the one we hand to detectorists who want Iron Audio, an adjustable 10 kHz frequency, and a 0 to 99 Digital Target ID without stepping up to AT-series money. Our team has run enough hours behind ACE machines to know where the 400 earns its slot. It belongs with hunters who want clean target separation in iron, predictable target ID, and an 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD coil ready for serious site work straight out of the box.

Iron Audio Performance in Trashy Coin Sites and Farm Fields

Park Coin Shooting in Trashy Ground

The 400's strongest tool in tight urban parks is the combination of Iron Audio and the 0 to 99 Target ID. We run discrimination just above the iron range and turn Iron Audio on, so masked iron under a good signal still leaks a low growl into the audio. That cue keeps us from chasing crown caps that ID into the zinc penny zone. After a clean high tone hits, we drop to Pinpoint and finish recovery with our Garrett Pro-Pointer AT. This setup runs clean in city parks and school grounds where copper, zinc, and modern junk share the same column.

Old Home Sites and Farm Fields

Junk iron buries silver, period. The Garrett ACE 400 metal detector's adjustable iron discrimination plus Iron Audio was built for this scenario. We open discrimination wide, accept the iron grunts, and listen for the broken or partial high-tone signals tucked between them. The DD coil's narrow side-to-side detection field separates targets that a concentric coil would mush together. Slow your sweep, half the coil width per pass, and let the audio talk.

Dry Beach and Shallow Fresh Water

The control housing is not submersible, but the 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD coil and the lower stem are. We hunt the wet line with the coil dragging in damp sand. PWM audio gives crisper attack on shallow rings, which matters when a faint half-second signal is all you get on a tide-washed beach. Iron Audio stays on, so bottle caps near the water line do not waste plugs.

10 kHz Frequency and Adjustable Iron Discrimination

    • Iron Audio reveals flattened iron like bottle caps and washers that read as good targets on most VLF machines, so we dig less trash in heavy coin and relic sites.
    • The 10 kHz operating frequency lifts response on low and medium conductors such as small gold rings, lead, and thin silver, areas where the 6.5 kHz frequency on entry-level ACE machines goes quiet.
    • The 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD coil ships standard, giving better depth and stable ground handling over mineralized soil than the concentric coils on lower ACE models.
    • Notch Discrimination plus adjustable iron discrimination shaves the trash band out of the audio while keeping the conductive zone wide open for coins, rings, and relics.
    • A Digital Target ID scale of 0 to 99 is granular enough to track a target across multiple sweeps and call it before digging.

How does the Garrett ACE 400 compare to the ACE 300?

The Garrett ACE 400 adds Iron Audio, a higher 10 kHz operating frequency, and the larger 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD coil over the ACE 300's 8 kHz frequency and 7 by 10 inch concentric coil. Both machines have a 0 to 99 Digital Target ID and four-segment iron discrimination, but the 400's Iron Audio vocalizes masked iron so we dig less trash in heavy coin sites. The ACE 300 is lighter and simpler, while the 400 is built for detectorists who hunt trashy parks and farm fields where iron discrimination and target separation matter. Is the Garrett ACE 400 waterproof?

The Garrett ACE 400's 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD coil and lower stem are waterproof and submersible, so you can hunt the wet line on beaches and drag the coil through shallow creeks. The control housing is splash-resistant only and cannot be submerged. We hunt damp sand and wade ankle-deep fresh water with the coil dragging in the surf, but the housing stays above water. For full submersion detecting, step up to the Garrett AT series.

What batteries does the Garrett ACE 400 use?

The Garrett ACE 400 runs on four AA alkaline batteries, which are included in the box. Battery life is long enough for full-day hunts in normal use, and the LCD displays a battery condition indicator before audio degrades. We carry a second sleeve of four AA batteries for all-day grid work and have run NiMH rechargeable AA batteries in the 400 without issue. The control housing holds the battery compartment, so swapping batteries in the field takes under a minute.

What is Iron Audio on the Garrett ACE 400?

Iron Audio is the Garrett ACE 400's headline feature, and it vocalizes the iron portion of mixed targets as a low grunt while keeping high tones on conductive metals like coins and rings. With a small amount of iron discrimination set, the machine still reports iron in the audio, so we can call bottle caps before digging and confirm a clean coin signal is not a coin sitting on the edge of a rusted nail. We use Iron Audio in trashy parks and farm fields where junk iron masks good targets, and it cuts recovery time in half.

Can the Garrett ACE 400 find gold?

The Garrett ACE 400's 10 kHz operating frequency lifts response on low and medium conductors such as small gold rings, thin gold chains, and lead, areas where the 6.5 kHz frequency on entry-level ACE machines goes quiet. The 400 can detect small gold rings in park turf and dry sand, and the Digital Target ID scale of 0 to 99 gives granular enough resolution to track a faint gold signal across multiple sweeps. For dedicated gold prospecting in mineralized ground, consider our coin-hunting detectors or a pulse-induction machine.

    Answered by John W. · May 2026

How deep does the Garrett ACE 400 detect?

The ACE 400 provides good depth on coin-sized targets in average soil and greater depth on larger relics depending on conductivity and soil conditions. The DD coil gives better depth and stable ground handling over mineralized soil than the concentric coils on lower ACE models. Depth is a function of target size, conductivity, soil moisture, and mineralization, so we tune sensitivity between 5 and 7 of 8 depending on site conditions and listen for faint repeatable signals that break the threshold.

    Answered by Richard T. · May 2026

What coils fit the Garrett ACE 400?

The Garrett ACE 400 ships with the 8.5 inch by 11 inch DD PROformance coil, which is the right coil for most coin and relic hunting. The optional 4.5 inch ACE Sniper coil tightens target separation in dense iron and fits tight spaces around foundations and fencelines. Both coils use the same connector and mount to the lower stem with the included hardware kit. The Garrett ACE 400 metal detector collection page lists compatible coils and accessories.
