The Mountain Goat is a reverse helix trommel built on the same principle as the full-size machines large placer operations run, scaled to 18 pounds so one person can carry it up a mountain. Spiral riffles inside the rotating barrel carry heavy material up to the high end while lighter tailings wash out the back, which makes the system completely self-cleaning: no breakdown for cleanup the way a sluice box demands.
How It Recovers Gold
The reverse helix descends from the Archimedes screw, and the geometry does the sorting for you. Riffles run 1/4 inch deep on 3/4 inch spacing. Screen your placer material to 1/2 inch or less for best results (rocks to 3/4 inch will pass), and check the nugget trap at the low end regularly for anything larger than 1/4 inch. The factory leg setting, front legs about 1 inch longer than the rear, tested best for fine and flour gold; adding a wetting agent like Jet Dry showed very little fine gold loss.
Run It in a Tub or a Stream
Set it in a mortar mixing tub with about 5 gallons of water recirculated by the 750 GPH pump, or run it directly in a stream. A sock slipped over the pump keeps leaves out of the spray system. Controls sit on top of the unit for easy reach. Feeding your concentrates onward? The trommel transfer kit connects the Mountain Goat directly to Camel Mining's Desert Fox panning machine for a one-person mining operation.
