Waterproof metal detectors range from 3-foot surf wading to 200-foot dive-rated systems - the depth rating matters. For most beach and river hunters, 10 feet covers everything. Underwater metal detectors for actual dive use need 65 feet or more. Use the depth category links below to find the right rating for how you hunt.

Waterproof Metal Detectors: How to Read the Ratings and Choose the Right One
The label “waterproof” on a metal detector covers a very wide range — from a splash-resistant coil attached to a non-submersible control box, to a fully sealed system rated for 200-foot dive use. Understanding what rating you actually need prevents buying either too little waterproofing (destroying the machine in the surf) or more than you need at unnecessary cost.
10–16 Feet: The Right Rating for Most Hunters
A 10–16 foot waterproof rating covers surf wading, river hunting, tidal flat detecting, and heavy rain hunting — the full range of situations most beach and water detectorists encounter. The Minelab Equinox 800 at 5 meters (16 feet), Garrett AT Pro at 10 feet, and Nokta Legend at 10 feet are the three most purchased machines in this category. All three are also simultaneous multi-frequency or proven multi-mode capable, which matters for beach performance as much as waterproofing does. See all 10–16 foot waterproof detectors.
65–196+ Feet: Underwater Metal Detectors for Dive Use
An underwater metal detector rated to 65 feet or deeper is purpose-built for actual snorkeling and scuba dive detecting. The XP DEUS II at 65 feet is the most capable multi-frequency option at this depth rating — Fast Multi-Frequency performance with full wireless audio at dive depth. The Garrett Sea Hunter MkII at 200+ feet is purpose-built for deep underwater work using pulse induction technology for saltwater conditions. These are specialist machines for a specific use case. See all 65+ foot rated detectors.
Waterproof Coil Only vs Full Submersion – Know the Difference
Some machines have waterproof coils with non-waterproof control boxes — the Garrett ACE series is an example. These handle rain and splashing on the coil but the control box cannot be submerged. Do not wade into surf or rivers with these machines expecting the control box to survive. If water detecting is part of the plan, choose a machine with full submersion waterproofing on both the coil and the control box. Every machine in this collection is fully waterproof — coil and control box both.
Salt Beach vs Freshwater – Different Waterproofing Needs
For saltwater beach and surf detecting, both waterproofing and simultaneous multi-frequency matter — single-frequency VLF machines false-signal in wet salt sand even if they are fully waterproof. For freshwater rivers and lakes, single-frequency machines handle the ground conditions better and full waterproofing is the primary requirement. Match both the depth rating and the frequency technology to your terrain. See the beach metal detector collection specifically for salt performance recommendations.
