Four Ways to Choose a Gold Detector
Most buying guides lead with brands. That’s fine for browsing, but it’s backwards for decision-making. The better way is to ask yourself four questions before you look at any spec sheet:

1. By Ground Type
The single biggest variable in gold detecting is the dirt under your coil. “Hot” ground — highly mineralized soil, black sand, iron-rich terrain — is where cheap detectors fall apart. Simultaneous Multi-Frequency (SMF)
Machines that transmit several frequencies at once and process each target across all of them. How to Actually Find Gold (Strategy That Works)
Prospect where gold has already been found
The single best predictor of finding gold is whether gold has been found nearby before. Old placer mining districts, dredge tailings, historical goldfields — these are where modern detectorists still pull nuggets, because the old-timers missed what they couldn’t see without a coil. Research county mining records, old topo maps, and state geological surveys before you drive anywhere.
Understand placer vs. lode
Placer gold has weathered out of its source and concentrated in gravels, streambeds, and alluvial deposits. Most modern detector-found gold is placer. Lode (hard-rock) gold is still in the original vein and rarely within detector reach unless the vein is eroding. Focus your time on placer ground.
Work the bedrock
Gold is heavy. Over time, it works down through sand and gravel until it hits bedrock, then it sits. Bedrock cracks, exposed seams, and shallow bedrock benches are where gold concentrates. A small coil plus a crevice tool and a prospecting pick is how you work bedrock — slowly and thoroughly.
Ground balance before every site change
Mineralization changes over short distances. Ground balance religiously. A well-balanced detector running smooth will out-find a poorly-balanced detector running hot every single time.
Slow down
Gold targets are often faint. If you sweep fast, you’ll skip them. The best prospectors look slow — overlap each swing by half the coil diameter, and when in doubt, go over an area twice at 90° to each other.
