John F.'s Story
While hunting in central Europe, John F. was hoping to uncover something far older than what's typically found in the United States. His search led him to a wooded area overlooking a medium-sized European villa-an area rich in history but also filled with modern trash.
After a couple of hours digging aluminum and debris, John was ready to wrap up for the day. Before leaving, he checked one last signal. After clearing some trash from the spot, he rechecked the area and received an unusual hit that stood out from the rest.
What he recovered made him pause-a coin that appeared far older than anything he'd found before. Based on its size and look, John began to wonder if it could be a Roman sestertius, a bronze coin used during the Roman Empire.
"Did I really find a Roman coin," John asked, "or am I just seeing things?"
Whether officially identified or not, the find turned a near-finished hunt into a memorable experience and a reminder that persistence-and curiosity-can still uncover pieces of the distant past.
