Ken J.'s Story
Ken J. recently received permission to detect a small yard near a school-an area that had already seen its share of detecting over the years. The property owner mentioned that a woman had detected the yard about seven years earlier and that he himself had also "poked around" with a detector. Still, Ken was welcome to give it a try.
Just ten minutes into the hunt, Ken got a solid signal near the sidewalk. Only about three inches down, he pulled out a 1917 Standing Liberty quarter-his first SL in two years of detecting.
Finds like this are a great reminder that even "hunted out" locations can still hold surprises. Older coins can be shallow, masked, or simply missed, and a fresh set of ears-or a different detector-can make all the difference.
For Ken, this short hunt became a milestone moment and proof that persistence, permissions, and patience can pay off in a big way.
