The Minelab Gold Monster 1000 runs 45 kHz VLF alongside a 24-bit signal processor, a combination that drives sensitivity to sub-gram gold beyond what 18–19 kHz single-frequency machines reach. Add fully automatic ground balance that tracks soil changes in real time, a visual Gold Chance Indicator on every target, and two dedicated search modes, and you have a gold machine that cuts setup time to near zero without trading away the sensitivity that decides a productive session from an empty one.
What You Gain Upgrading to the Gold Monster 1000
- 45 kHz sensitivity to fine gold: Most gold-capable VLF machines top out at 18–19 kHz. This machine runs at more than double that frequency, producing stronger responses to sub-gram targets that fall into the noise floor of lower-frequency detectors.
- Easy-Trak automatic ground balance: Ground mineralization shifts across a single creek bed, a single hillside, a single tailings pile. Easy-Trak monitors soil conditions and adjusts continuously, keeping the detector stable through transitions that require constant manual rebalancing on less capable machines.
- Gold Chance Indicator: The monochrome LCD gives you a live visual gauge of target probability. Readings shift right for conductive metals like gold, left for ferrous trash and hot rocks. Coming from a machine that only tones without a visual cue, this changes dig decisions on every target.
- Manual and Auto+ sensitivity: Ten manual sensitivity levels plus Auto and Auto+ let you push the machine as hard as the ground allows. On quiet ground, Auto+ finds targets that Auto misses. On chattery ground, dial back to Manual without rethinking your whole approach.
- Two focused search modes: Gold mode runs iron rejection for trashy ground. Deep All Metal removes discrimination for maximum depth and sensitivity in clean ground. Both modes switch in two button presses, with no menu cycling required.
- Dual 7.2V lithium-ion battery packs: Two removable rechargeable packs ship in the box, along with an AA battery adapter as a backup. A single-pack machine can leave you short mid-session. This one ships ready for full days.
For detectorists ready to compare the step-up to pulse induction technology, our complete gold detector lineup includes PI options at every price point above this detector.

Field Use
Alluvial Creek and River Beds
Creek beds shift mineral composition across meters, with clay, gravel, and bedrock often sitting side by side in a single run. Easy-Trak adapts without manual input, letting you keep swinging through transitions that require constant rebalancing on fixed-balance machines. The 5" GM05 coil fits into bedrock cracks and narrow crevices where coarser placer gold collects. Our post on detecting in mineralized soil covers ground handling strategy in more depth.
- Mode: Gold (iron reject)
- Sensitivity: Auto or Auto+
- Ground Balance: Easy-Trak (automatic)
- Volume: 5–6 near running water
Arid and Mineralized Goldfields
Red earth, caliche, and volcanic ground push heavy ground noise into most VLF detectors, forcing operators to drop sensitivity or accept false signals. The 24-bit processor on this machine filters ground interference without cutting depth, letting you run Auto+ in mineralization that forces lower-spec detectors back to manual control. Gold mode's iron rejection handles scattered ferrous debris common in old diggings without silencing the machine.
- Mode: Gold (iron reject)
- Sensitivity: Auto+ on quiet patches; step to Manual 7–8 if the machine chatters
- Ground Balance: Easy-Trak (automatic)
- Volume: 4–5 in high-mineralization areas
Old Dredge Piles and Tailing Fields
Tailings stack iron junk directly over gold-bearing material. Gold mode's iron rejection reduces nuisance signals from nails, bolts, and ferrous debris without shutting down sensitivity to conductive targets at the same depth. Deep All Metal is available for a quick check of a quiet corner where you want maximum sensitivity and are willing to dig more signals.
- Mode: Gold (iron reject) for iron-heavy areas; Deep All Metal for clean spots
- Sensitivity: Manual 6–7
- Ground Balance: Easy-Trak
- Volume: 5–6
45 kHz VLF and 24-Bit Signal Processing
VLF detection at 45 kHz produces stronger electromagnetic responses from small, low-conductivity targets like fine gold flake. At 45 kHz, this detector sits well above the 18–19 kHz range typical of general gold-capable VLF machines, producing audible responses on sub-gram targets that register only as faint threshold variations on lower-frequency detectors.
The 24-bit signal processor handles higher-frequency data without introducing proportional noise. It tightens ground filtering while preserving target signal integrity, which is why this machine runs Auto+ in moderate mineralization rather than forcing you to back off sensitivity to stay stable. The Gold Chance Indicator translates that processed signal into a real-time visual read, shifting right for conductive metals, left for ferrous targets and hot rocks. For a deeper read on how frequency shapes target detection, see our guide to getting the most from high-frequency detecting.

Build, Display, and Audio
The detector weighs 1.33 kg (2.94 lbs) and collapses to 94.4 cm (37.2 in) for pack transport, extending to 138.2 cm (54.4 in) in the field. The three-piece adjustable shaft handles most adult heights comfortably. The control box is rain and splash proof. It handles field moisture and light rain but is not submersible. The coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft), keeping shallow creek and stream work fully within spec. The monochrome LCD shows the Gold Chance Indicator, current sensitivity level, and selected mode at a glance, with no menus required for common field adjustments. Volume runs across eight manual levels; the built-in speaker is clear enough for quiet ground, and the included wired headphones connect via the 3.5 mm (1/8") jack for focused listening in wind or near water. A pinpointer significantly speeds target recovery in bedrock crevices and narrow creek edges: our pinpointer collection includes waterproof models matched to prospecting use.
Power comes from two removable 7.2 V / 2700 mAh lithium-ion packs, with the AA battery adapter accepting eight AAs as a field backup.
Coil Options
The included GM05 5" Double-D round coil is waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft). Its compact footprint handles tight bedrock, brushy terrain, and narrow creek edges where a larger coil loses maneuverability. Target separation in mineralized, iron-heavy ground is tight. This is the coil we recommend running first on a new patch. It will find what is there.
The optional GM10 10" x 6" Double-D elliptical coil covers more ground per swing on open gravel bars and flat detecting surfaces, producing stronger depth on larger targets. Swap to the GM10 after working a patch with the GM05 when you want to check depth on missed targets or cover more ground efficiently. Both coils are waterproof to 1 m (3.3 ft) and connect via the included rod-to-coil adapter.
