Elliptical Search Coils: Target Separation and Maneuverability

Most stock coils that ship with metal detectors are elliptical — the shape manufacturers have found works best across the widest range of detecting conditions. Elliptical coils are easier to maneuver than round coils of similar size, making them ideal for working along fence lines, around tree roots, and in tight areas where targets tend to collect.

Small Elliptical Coils – for Trashy Sites

Small elliptical coils — often called sniper coils in the 5–7 inch range — excel in iron-heavy and trash-dense environments. Their focused detection field allows you to isolate individual targets more clearly, helping separate good finds from surrounding debris. This makes them especially effective at old home sites, cellar holes, and urban parks where target density is high. They also allow for more precise pinpointing in tight spaces.

Large Elliptical Coils – for Coverage and Depth

Large elliptical coils — typically 11–15 inches and above — are designed for covering more ground efficiently while reaching deeper targets. On open sites like farm fields, beaches, and low-trash areas, they allow you to search faster and detect deeper targets that smaller coils may miss. They strike a balance between coverage and maneuverability, making them a versatile upgrade for many detecting situations.

Elliptical coil compatibility is specific to each detector model, so it’s important to match connector type and frequency requirements.
