How a Gold Pan Actually Works
Gold is roughly 19 times denser than water and several times denser than the gravel around it. Swirling material under water stratifies it — heavy gold sinks to the pan's bottom while lighter sand and rock wash over the rim. The riffles molded into the pan wall act as catch steps that hold gold back during the washing motion. That's the whole machine: gravity, water, and patience. The skill is in the shake that settles gold early and the controlled swirl that ejects everything else, and a pan with sharp, deep riffles forgives a sloppy swirl far better than a shallow-riffled one.
