Should I choose the black or green gold pan?

Both colors give gold strong contrast, so it comes down to preference. Black makes bright flakes pop the most, while green makes it a little easier to tell black sand from fine gold at the end of a pan. Plenty of prospectors keep one of each. Compare more options in our gold pans and panning kits.

Which way should the riffles face when I pan?

Tilt the pan so the riffles sit on the low side, facing away from you. As you swirl and dip, lighter gravel washes over the riffles and out while gold sinks and catches behind them. Screening material through a TerraX sifting classifier first makes this go much faster.

Why use a plastic gold pan instead of a steel one?

A plastic pan is lighter, will not rust and needs no burning off of factory oil the way steel pans do, and the dark plastic shows gold better than bare steel. When you are down to the last flakes, a TerraX 3 oz gold snifter bottle pulls them out of the pan cleanly.
